The New York Academy of Medicine will screen Power to Heal, an hour-long documentary narrated by Danny Glover about the struggle for the desegregation of hospitals on July 10 at 6pm. This event is the second in the Race & Health series at The New York Academy of Medicine.

Power to Heal tells a poignant chapter in the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is the tale of how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country practically overnight. Using the carrot of Medicare dollars, the federal government virtually ended the practice of racially segregating patients, doctors, medical staffs, blood supplies and linens. Power to Heal illustrates how Movement leaders and grass-roots volunteers pressed and worked with the federal government to achieve a greater measure of justice and fairness for African-Americans.

After the viewing of the documentary, there will be a question-and-answer period with the filmmaker Dr. Barbara Berney, a distinguished scholar in public health, environmental justice, and the U.S. healthcare system and Adam Biggs, faculty at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. The event will be moderated by Dr. Danielle Laraque-Arena, former president of SUNY Upstate Medical University and CEO of Upstate Health System in Syracuse, NY and currently Scholar in Residence at the New York Academy of Medicine.
